How to install
Step 1: Creating a clean installation of original game
- Insert your original HoI 2, Doomsday or Armageddon CD-ROM. Cancel the "Play" screen if it appears.
- In Windows Explorer, locate your existing Hearts of Iron 2, Doomsday or Armageddon program folder. Temporarily rename it to something else (Example: If your current installation is located at
C:\Program Files\Hearts of Iron 2then rename the folder toC:\Program Files\Hearts of Iron 2 Backup). - Locate the
Setup.exefile on the CD-ROM. Run the program. - Choose the "Repair" option. Follow the on-screen instructions until you reach the "Finish" prompt.
- Open the Windows Explorer. You should now have two directories: The renamed one and your original game folder (In our example
C:\Program Files\Hearts of Iron 2andC:\Program Files\Hearts of Iron 2 Backup. If necessary, press the F5 key to refresh the screen display). - Download the latest patch from the Paradox website and run the program. Follow the on-screen instructions. When asked to Choose Destination Location, make sure that the folder listed is the new HoI 2, Doomsday or Armageddon folder that you have created before. If not, click the Browse button and locate the correct directory.
- After installing the patch, rename the new directory (In our example:
C:\Program Files\Hearts of Iron 2) to "1914" (In our example:C:\Program Files\1914). - Finally, rename your backup directory back to the original name. (In our example, rename
C:\Program Files\Hearts of Iron 2 BackuptoC:\Program Files\Hearts of Iron 2again). Make sure you don’t get the two mixed up! If everything is right, you should have two folders now, one called "1914" and your original game folder.
Step 2: Deleting files that relate specifically to the Second World War
In Windows Explorer, locate the following seven folders in your new 1914 directory, and delete each of them (including their sub-folders, if any) to avoid possible missmatches with the 1914 data.
\ai\db\music(only if you use the 1914 music pack!)\scenarios\GFX\Interface\models\GFX\Interface\pics\GFX\Interface\tech
Step 3: Downloading and extracting 1914
- Get the right version: 1914 comes in a HoI2-compatible version, and in a version for Doomsday and Armageddon. Make sure you get the right one. Armageddon Users have to use the Doomsday-version and the Armageddon-patch.
- Optional, you can get new music for 1914 if you like to. The game will run without it as well (as long as you haven't deleted your music-folder)
- Run the program and extract the contents of the files to your 1914 directory. Choose "Overwrite" if asked.
Step 4: Installing the No Time Limit patch and choose the right language
- Locate the
no_time_limit_11.exefile within your 1914 directory. It is included in both download packs. Run the program (You may need admin rights to do so on Windows Vista and 7). - You will be asked to select the target file to patch. Click on the "..." [Browse] button.
- Check that the 1914 folder is displayed, and select the
HoI2.exefile. Click "Open" then "Start". - If your HoI2/DD is not in english language, open your
1914\settings.cfgfile with a texteditor of choice (Windows notepad f.e.). Change the number in line 1 (language) to 0 (zero) and save your changes. - Now run the game (by starting
HoI2.exein your 1914 directory) and have fun!
Upgrade an existing installation
You don’t need to reinstall the whole mod, if you have already the latest mayor version (0.X0 where X is the mayor version) installed. Get the latest upgrade version instead and just extract it into your 1914 directory. Choose yes to overwrite existing files, if asked.
F.A.Q.
- Why is it that complicated to install 1914?
Due to licence limitation, we are not allowed to publish any core files, which are not edited by the 1914 mod team. Therefore we cannot publish complete packages but the files which are changed by our team. This means that you have to build up the mix between core files and mod files on your own. Furthermore, we like to make this mod available to as much players as possible. Therefore, it comes in seperate versions for every HoI2-version. - Lots of events happen on the first day of each scenario. What is wrong?
It seems that you have not unlocked the timescale correctly, so that your game starts on 1st January 1936. Since all 1914 events are intended to happen before 1936, these events will fire on the first day of your game. See Step 5 of the installation instructions on how to unlock the whole timescale. - Many texts are missing and countries have the wrong name. What is wrong?
This usally happens to players of non-english versions of HoI2. At present, 1914 is only available in english language. Therefore you have to change your language-version to English in order to get the right texts. See Step 5 of the installation instructions on how to change your language to english. - I get an "unknown command: free_ic" error on scenario startup. What is wrong?
The free_ic command was introduced in a later version of HoI2. If this error appears, it seems that you have not installed the latest patches correctly BEFORE installing 1914. See Step 1 of the installation instructions on how to update your Hearts of Iron 2. - Is there still somebody working on 1914?
Unfortunately no, but if you like to, you're welcome! There's still much work to do. get in contact with other players through the official 1914 forum and post your changes there. Eventually, there will be another update to 1914 at some point in the future. - My question is not listed here. Where can I get help?
Most of the problems with 1914 are already discussed before. Check the 1914 discussion board if there is already a solution for your problem. Only start new threads, after checking the existing discussions or bug threads. We’re all trying to help whereever we can, but understand that we’re bored to answer the same questions again and again. Nevertheless, we appreciate every new bug report.
